Thomas Anapol, Elected President of PAJustice (2016-17)
After serving as a Board member for the last decade, I am honored and privileged to have become your 49th President.
Over the last few years, our association has undergone a tremendous transformation. A name change, significant operational and personnel changes, hiring a new highly effective and energetic chief lobbyist in Harrisburg, all to press for civil and social justice. In conjunction with these changes and at our core, we continue to protect the injured, the weak and the oppressed.
In the last two years, PAJ has been instrumental in electing a consumer friendly governor in Tom Wolf and, in an historic election, three Supreme Court Justices committed to the civil justice system. My goal for the coming year is to increase our outreach with the legislative branch, the third branch of government, where Corporate America and Tort Reformers continue their relentless attack on the middle class. We must continue to work with our allies and friends to effectuate positive change where appropriate and to maintain open access to our courts where the oppressed still can have their day in court.
In our law practice, we take on Corporate America every day. We have learned over the years that the most effective approach to fighting Goliath is working collaboratively with our friends and colleagues. Clients benefit when we pool our resources and present a unified front. This is how I became a leader in the fight to hold the artificial hip industry accountable for too many unnecessary surgeries with inadequately tested metal-on-metal (MoM) hip products. This experience and acceptance by my peers allowed me to serve as Co-Lead Counsel in the Biomet MoM hip implant litigation and as a lead negotiator in the Stryker MoM hip litigation. Working with surgeons and colleagues, we struck back at corporate America’s relentless marketing machine.
As your President, I will continue to seek your counsel and be receptive to your ideas to move us forward. I will welcome the ideas from other professional associations who also face similar challenges. Together, we will grow stronger and continue to wage the good fight. I ask you to join me in strengthening LawPac, and by doing so, help prevent bad legislation seeking to protect those whose conduct far too often injures and damages Pennsylvanians. Many fine Legislators do understand the economic values fostered by a fair civil justice system. In the same vein, we must help defeat anti-consumer legislators who attack individuals’ rights at the Federal level. This is an exciting time, and I accept the challenge of being your President.
